Sunil More(Updt 8): If there is a sun, then why it isn't shining?

For no rhyme or reason whatsoever, More's custody is extended, once again :
Mumbai police constable Sunil More charged with raping a girl at Marine Drive outpost on 21 April had his judicial custody extended for the fourth time till 24 June..

Fifty-three days have lapsed since the cop had committed the rape inside the police outpost. But the Mumbai police, which showed interest on having an expeditious trial, are yet to prepared the chargesheet. Now with the police having done precious little for the prosecution of the accused, there is a growing suspicion over the integrity of the police force. The limit for filing charges is 90 days.

Does this mean, if they aren't able to file a chargesheet, within 90 days, he will go scott free, or that he has to be released on bail or some such thing?
This is a general question, not just specific to More's case. If yes, then it's so stupid. All one has to do is sufficiently grease police's palms, so that they aren't able to get the red pen close to the register. And then, voila! I remember a case against Bal Thakrey for making inflammatory speeches(articles?) during 1992-93 riots was thrown away, somewhere around 1998-99, citing a similar argument that the incident occurred few years back. Whole of Bombay had come to standstill, with tensions running high, just to hear that lame excuse. Are the courts allowed to go amnestic? Anyone with a better legal dope on this, please enlighten.

ps: And while we are on Bombay, Mid Day beats other media channels hands down with its proactive reporting -- gets the story out, and forces the authorities to do something about it, rather than just report the consequences. This time, it's the roof on local railway stations: No if... no but... sirf chhat! -- what a headline!

  • I think in this case More will pay. The reasons:

    1) There's a lot of public anger
    2) The police need to take some action in order to restore image.
    3) More is just a lowly constable...he cant (seriously) have some contacts really high up. So, making him pay gets rid of him, and makes the police look good.

The problem ofcourse is our archaic justice system...where there are more holes than a sieve

  • One of the hundred loop holes...

It'll be power-play-time again. But as Sunil Laxman says as this time it's a lowly constable, there might be some "justice".

  • But with people like the Shiv sena who actually were on the constable's side....anything is possible.....aisa bhi hotha hai!

  • Sunil, Gabby:
    1) Public anger is quickly subsiding. Due to the plain ole time factor, and because all proceedings are now taking place via video-conferencing for fear of attacks on More if he is brought in court. And yes, media coverage too is coming down. I wrote about it.
    2) 50-50. I don't believe, many in the Bombay police force even feel or internalise concepts such as 'collective image' of their organisation or uniform, to worry abt it.
    3) Yes, this seems to be the ray of hope streaming in.

Anon, yes, we shd always keep such things in mind.

  • What the heck are you doing by making such posts that are clearly against the great Indian culture and tradition?
    [/sarcasm]

    Anon:
There is a difference between passing on the guilt to the victim (which Sena did and was rightly called Talibanesque) and being on the side of the perpeterator (which Sena definitely didn't).

  • Niket, you have a point there.

  • Women terorists should unite and fight crime against women :-

    1) Kill sunil more.
    2) Kill police who are trying to protect sunil more.
    3) Bomb the Police station where the rape took place.
